Officially Licensed USMC Special Operations Command Stickers — Marines Are Who We Are. Special Operations Is What We Do.
When every other branch joined SOCOM in the 1980s, the Marine Corps said no — because every Marine is already special. It took September 11 to change that answer.
Marine Forces Special Operations Command — MARSOC — is the Marine Corps' dedicated contribution to U.S. Special Operations Command, and the home of today's Marine Raiders. Officially activated on February 24, 2006 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, MARSOC was born from decades of debate over whether the Marine Corps needed a formal special operations component. When SOCOM was established in 1986, Marine leadership argued that their Force Reconnaissance units were already elite enough and that pulling Marines out of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force would weaken the Corps as a whole. But the September 11 attacks and the expanding Global War on Terrorism changed the calculus. A pilot program called Detachment One — 86 hand-picked Marines, mostly from 1st and 2nd Force Reconnaissance Battalions — deployed to Iraq alongside Navy SEALs in 2004 and fought in the Second Battle of Fallujah, proving that Marines could integrate seamlessly into the special operations community. Det One's success led directly to MARSOC's creation. The command's combat units proudly carry the Marine Raider name, officially bestowed in 2014 in honor of the legendary World War II Raiders — Edson's Raiders and Carlson's Raiders — who conducted daring amphibious raids across the Pacific beginning in 1942. Today's Marine Raiders are trained in direct action, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, and unconventional warfare, operating in Marine Special Operations Teams deployed across the globe. Since its founding, MARSOC has conducted over 300 operational deployments across more than a dozen countries, earned over 300 valor awards, and lost 43 Raiders in training and combat — including two multipurpose canines. Headquartered at Camp Lejeune under a Major General, MARSOC fields the Marine Raider Regiment with three Raider Battalions, standing shoulder to shoulder with SEALs, Green Berets, and Air Force Special Tactics as one of America's premier special operations forces.
Perfect For: MARSOC Raiders and support Marines, Critical Skills Operators, Force Recon veterans, Camp Lejeune SOF community, Det One alumni, and anyone who carries the Raider spirit forward.
