The 2nd Marine Raider Battalion is a U.S. Marine Corps special operations unit assigned to the Marine Raider Regiment under Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), based at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The battalion's mission is to organize, train, equip, and deploy Marine Critical Skills Operators (CSOs) to conduct counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and security force assistance worldwide as directed by U.S. Special Operations Command. The unit traces its lineage to Carlson's Raiders — the original 2nd Marine Raider Battalion of World War II that conducted the Makin Island raid (August 1942), the Long Patrol behind Japanese lines on Guadalcanal (November–December 1942), and earned a Presidential Unit Citation for Bougainville. MARSOC was activated on February 24, 2006 at Camp Lejeune, and 2nd MSOB stood up alongside 1st and 3rd MSOBs in the April 2009 reorganization that formed the Marine Special Operations Regiment. On June 19, 2015 the unit was re-designated as 2nd Marine Raider Battalion alongside the rest of the MARSOC "Raider" rebranding, formally claiming the WWII Raider lineage.
