The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU), known as the "Pride of the Pacific," is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, with approximately 2,200 personnel. The 11th MEU is one of seven Marine Expeditionary Units currently active in the U.S. Marine Corps and is part of I Marine Expeditionary Force — the West Coast MAGTF that deploys with the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and other amphibious forces to provide forward-deployed, rapid-response capability across the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and U.S. Central Command areas of operations. The unit was originally formed as the 17th Marine Amphibious Unit on April 13, 1979 at Camp Pendleton, was redesignated as the 11th Marine Amphibious Unit on July 25, 1984, and finally as the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit on February 5, 1988 — the same day the Marine Corps clarified the broader MAGTF designation construct. The 11th MEU has deployed extensively with the USS Boxer ARG to the Pacific and has participated in operations including Desert Shield/Storm, Somalia, Iraq, and a long list of humanitarian missions across the Indo-Pacific. The MEU's three-element MAGTF includes a Battalion Landing Team (BLT), a Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (REIN) Aviation Combat Element (ACE), and a Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB).
