VMM-365 traces its lineage to 1 July 1963, when the squadron stood up at Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana, California, flying UH-34Ds in support of Fleet Marine Forces. Combat deployments to Vietnam earned the Blue Knights a Presidential Unit Citation, a Navy Unit Commendation, and 17 Distinguished Flying Crosses, cementing a reputation for assault support under fire that still defines the unit today. Redesignated VMM-365 on 15 January 2009 after converting to the MV-22B Osprey, the squadron is based at MCAS New River, North Carolina, under Marine Aircraft Group 26 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The Blue Knights reached Osprey combat readiness faster than any previous transitioning squadron, and in March 2012 executed the largest tiltrotor-borne troop insert in history during Operation JAWS. The YM tail code identifies Blue Knights aircraft on the flight line, and this 4th of July shoulder patch captures that unit identity through a patriotic lens, pairing the squadron's storied callsign with an Independence Day design that works on flight suits, range bags, veteran jackets, and display boards alike.
