VMFA-314 was commissioned on October 1, 1943, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, and has carried the Black Knights name since 1957, when the squadron earned the Commandant's Aviation Efficiency Trophy alongside its redesignation. The squadron holds a string of Marine Corps firsts: first to transition to the F-4B Phantom II in 1961, first Marine tactical squadron to fly the F/A-18 Hornet in 1982, and first Marine Corps squadron to achieve Initial Operational Capability with the F-35C Lightning II in January 2020. During Operation Desert Storm, the Black Knights flew 814 combat sorties, more than any other Navy or Marine Corps squadron, and returned without the loss of a single crew member or aircraft. In 2022, VMFA-314 made history again as the first Marine Corps F-35C squadron to deploy operationally aboard an aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, as part of Carrier Air Wing Nine. In early 2026, flying F-35Cs off the Abraham Lincoln, the Black Knights conducted combat sorties in Operation Epic Fury, the operation this patch directly commemorates. Based at MCAS Miramar under MAG-11 and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, the squadron's motto, Courage, Honor, Strength, runs through every deployment and every stitch of this embroidered piece.
