MALS-16, known as the Immortals, is the aviation logistics backbone of Marine Aircraft Group 16 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, operating under the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Activated in 1952, the squadron has built a record of firsts across more than seven decades of service, including being the first MALS to deploy, the first to support combat operations, and the first to earn the Department of Defense Phoenix Award for outstanding logistics performance. The squadron's motto, Best Supporting the Best, reflects a culture where maintainers, supply specialists, avionics technicians, and ordnance Marines work across demanding rotations to sustain sortie rates for MAG-16 squadrons at home and in forward-deployed environments from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East. Within a MALS, individual shops and work-center teams often produce their own morale patches to mark the identity, humor, and pride of the people doing the daily work that keeps aircraft mission-ready.
