MALS-16 — USMC Embroidered Patch
The Immortals
MALS-16 didn't just maintain aircraft — it wrote the playbook for Marine aviation logistics in combat. As the first MALS ever to deploy, the first to deploy in support of combat operations, and the first to deploy aboard an Aviation Logistics Support Ship, the "Immortals" have set the standard for expeditionary aviation logistics. This patch represents that pioneering legacy.
Originally activated in 1952 as Headquarters Squadron 16, the unit earned a Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit Commendations, and two Meritorious Unit Citations for its Vietnam service supporting MAG-16 at Da Nang. Redesignated MALS-16 in 1988, the squadron immediately made history during Desert Storm by deploying aboard the SS Curtiss and providing logistics support to over 106 aircraft in a harsh desert environment. MALS Marines even landed at El Jabbar airfield during a firefight to begin EOD clearing operations. The Immortals went on to earn the DoD Phoenix Award and have supported operations in Somalia, the Global War on Terror, and beyond from MCAS Miramar.
Perfect For:
MALS-16 Immortals veterans and active duty Marines, MAG-16 personnel, MCAS Miramar community, MV-22 and CH-53 maintainers, and aviation logistics collectors.
