Marine Aircraft Group MAG-36 — USMC Embroidered Patch
Okinawa's Air Assault Force
MAG-36 has been the tip of the spear for Marine rotary wing operations in the Western Pacific for over seven decades. From the rice paddies of Vietnam to the training ranges of the Pacific Rim, this group has delivered Marines into the fight and brought them home. This officially licensed patch represents that enduring mission.
Originally formed on 2 June 1952 at MCAF Santa Ana as Marine Air Group (Helicopter Transport) 36, the group spent years perfecting amphibious helicopter assault operations. In 1965, MAG-36 sailed for Vietnam aboard the USS Princeton, flying ashore at Ky Ha — the first full Marine Air Group to arrive in South Vietnam and the first time a full helicopter group had been transported this way. During Vietnam, the group supported the 3rd Marine Division, was heavily involved in the Battle of Khe Sanh, and participated in operations throughout I Corps. Now based at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, under the 1st MAW, MAG-36 remains the assault support linchpin of the Western Pacific.
Perfect For:
MAG-36 veterans and active duty Marines, 1st MAW aircrew, MCAS Futenma community, WestPac deployment veterans, and Marine helicopter aviation historians.
First Helos in Vietnam.
