Marine Aircraft Group MAG-32 — USMC Embroidered Patch
Philippines Campaign Veterans
MAG-32 carries the legacy of Marine dive-bomber crews who flew over 8,800 combat sorties and dropped more than 19,000 bombs in the campaign to liberate the Philippines. This officially licensed patch honors one of the most combat-tested air groups of World War II.
Commissioned on 1 February 1943 at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, MAG-32 trained its squadrons before deploying to the Pacific in 1944. Arriving at Mangaldan airfield on Luzon in January 1945, MAG-32 combined with MAG-24 to form MAGSDAGUPAN, providing devastating close air support for the Sixth Army. The group's SBD Dauntless dive-bombers went ashore with assault troops at Zamboanga in March 1945, operating from an expeditionary airfield within two days. As part of MAGSZAM, MAG-32 supported landings on Jolo Island, Parang-Cotabato, and Sarangani, with 44 dive-bombers directed against Japanese positions by tactical air control parties. The group helped pioneer the close air support doctrine that would become the hallmark of Marine aviation.
