Marine Aircraft Group MAG-31 — USMC Embroidered Patch
Okinawa's Finest
MAG-31 carries a legacy forged in the fires of the Pacific's most savage battles. From the kamikaze-swept skies over Okinawa to the modern flight lines of Beaufort, this group has defined Marine fighter aviation for over eight decades. This officially licensed patch represents that proud heritage.
During the Battle of Okinawa, MAG-31 came ashore on 7 April 1945 and immediately put 80 out of 109 aircraft into the fight, maintaining combat air patrol against the devastating kamikaze attacks threatening the American Fleet. The group provided close air support for Marines and Soldiers on the ground while also operating over Kyushu, the Chinese Coast, and Formosa. On 12 October 1945, MAG-31 became the first Marine land-based MAG to operate in the Japanese homeland when it moved to Yokosuka. After deactivation and multiple reactivations, the group found its permanent home at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, where it continues to serve under the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing as a premier fighter attack group.

MAG-31 veterans and active duty Marines, 2nd MAW fighter attack aircrew, MCAS Beaufort community members, Okinawa campaign historians, and USMC aviation patch collectors.
