The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper (often colloquially referred to as Predator, from its MQ-1 predecessor) is the United States military's primary medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle, capable of conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions as well as precision strike operations with Hellfire missiles and GBU-38 JDAMs. The MQ-9 has been one of the most significant weapons systems of the Global War on Terror, providing persistent overhead surveillance of battlefields in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and across Africa, and conducting thousands of precision strikes against high-value targets. The Reaper can fly at altitudes above 50,000 feet, remain airborne for over 27 hours, and carry a sensor suite that includes electro-optical/infrared cameras, synthetic aperture radar, and laser designators. This U.S. flag MQ-9 shoulder patch combines the Reaper's silhouette with the American flag — representing the aircraft's role as an instrument of American power projection and the operators who fly it from ground control stations thousands of miles from the target area.
