United States Marine Corps Infantry Officer Course (IOC)
The Infantry Officer Course is one of the most demanding and prestigious training programs in the United States military, located at Camp Barrett within Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The course traces its roots to the Marine Corps School established at Quantico in the early twentieth century, evolving over the decades to reflect the changing nature of modern warfare. Graduates of The Basic School's 28-week Officer Basic Course who are selected for an infantry Military Occupational Specialty remain at Quantico for the IOC, which currently runs approximately 13 weeks across three class cycles annually.
IOC's comprehensive curriculum combines classroom instruction, tactical decision games, sand table exercises, field training, and simulated combat exercises to produce highly skilled infantry platoon commanders. Students must pass the grueling IOC Combat Endurance Test on Training Day 1, demonstrate proficiency in crew-served weapons, patrolling, reconnaissance, and Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT), and meet demanding physical and leadership standards. The course prepares officers for all infantry platoon commander billets within a Marine infantry battalion, including rifle platoon, weapons platoon, and heavy weapons platoons encompassing 81mm mortars, antiarmor, and heavy machine gun sections.
More than 1,700 new officers pass through The Basic School each year, and IOC selects only the most qualified to serve as the Marine Corps' ground combat leaders. Graduates proceed to assigned infantry battalions within the major Marine Infantry Divisions to lead Marines in the most demanding operational environments worldwide.
