United States Space Force (USSF)
The United States Space Force was officially established on 20 December 2019 with the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, becoming the sixth independent branch of the United States Armed Forces and the first new military service since the Air Force was created in 1947. The USSF was formed by redesignating the Air Force Space Command, which had managed military space operations since its establishment on 1 September 1982 at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.
The roots of American military space operations extend to the earliest days of the Cold War and the Space Race, with the Air Force launching the nation's first satellites and developing the Navstar Global Positioning System beginning in 1978. Space forces proved critical during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 — often called the "first space war" — providing GPS navigation, satellite communications, and missile warning to coalition forces. General Jay Raymond became the Space Force's first Chief of Space Operations on 20 December 2019, and on 18 April 2020, 86 members of the U.S. Air Force Academy class of 2020 became the service's first commissioned officers.
Today, the Space Force operates under the Department of the Air Force with approximately 8,600 Guardians organized into three field commands: Space Operations Command, Space Systems Command, and Space Training and Readiness Command. Its mission encompasses satellite operations, missile warning, space surveillance, GPS operations, and space launch capabilities from installations across the nation. The USSF motto, "Semper Supra" — Always Above — captures the service's commitment to securing American interests in the ultimate high ground.
Perfect For: Space Force Guardians, USSF veterans, space operations professionals, Air Force Space Command alumni, satellite communications specialists, and supporters of America's newest military branch.
A tribute to the Guardians of the United States Space Force — defending the ultimate high ground and securing America's future in space.
