The USMC/Combat Helicopter Association traces its roots to a small group of Marine Vietnam-era helicopter pilots who reconnected after losing touch with the crews they flew alongside in combat. That first reunion in Las Vegas in 1988 drew roughly 200 veterans representing every helicopter type flown in Marine service, and the organization has grown steadily ever since, now counting more than 5,700 members. Originally chartered as the USMC/Vietnam Helicopter Pilot and Aircrew Association, the organization evolved its name to reflect the full arc of Marine rotary-wing and tiltrotor history, while keeping its founding mission unchanged: preserving the camaraderie of Marine Corps pilots, aircrew, crew chiefs, gunners, maintenance personnel, Navy corpsmen, flight surgeons, and all who supported the mission. The Association publishes the POPASMOKE newsletter, holds biennial national reunions, and administers scholarship funds for members and their families. This officially licensed key ring carries that identity into daily life, connecting the holder to a community that spans Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and every deployment in between.
