The 1st Battalion, 11th Marines (1/11) stands as one of the most battle-tested artillery battalions in the history of the United States Marine Corps. Originally activated on 3 December 1923 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia as the 1st Battalion, 10th Regiment, the unit deployed to Tientsin, China in 1927 with the 3rd Marine Brigade before being redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines on 1 September 1940. Deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in October 1940, the battalion became part of the newly redesignated 1st Marine Division on 1 February 1941.
During World War II, 1/11 provided devastating artillery support across the Pacific, reinforcing the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal in September 1942 where its guns helped repel Japanese offensives at Henderson Field, earning the Presidential Unit Citation. The battalion fought at Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, firing directly into enemy cave positions and conducting effective counter-battery fire. In the Korean War, the battalion deployed with the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade to the Pusan Perimeter in August 1950, participated in the amphibious landing at Inchon, and endured the brutal fighting at the Chosin Reservoir. During the breakout from Chosin on 7 December 1950, batteries of the 11th Marines laid their guns level against a battalion of Chinese infantry at close range, counting over 500 enemy dead.
From January 1966 to March 1971, 1/11 served throughout Vietnam, operating from Chu Lai, Da Nang, Quang Tri, Phu Bai, Con Thien, Khe Sanh, and Dong Ha. The battalion deployed for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990–1991, participated in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia in 1992–1993, and deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2010 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, providing general support artillery fires to Task Force Leatherneck. In 2023, the battalion became a combined rocket and cannon artillery battalion under Force Design 2030, incorporating HIMARS alongside M777A2 howitzers.
