The United States Navy Fighter Weapons School was established on 3 March 1969 at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, born directly from the hard lessons of aerial combat over Vietnam. When Navy kill ratios fell dangerously low during Operation Rolling Thunder, the Ault Report called for a graduate-level fighter weapons school, and a small cadre of nine pilots and radar intercept officers built one from scratch in a repurposed trailer. Their work transformed naval aviation: by 1972 the kill ratio had improved five-fold. Today TOPGUN operates as a department within the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada, where it continues to produce the fleet's most advanced strike fighter tacticians, adversary instructors, and air intercept controllers.
