Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39) is a U.S. Marine Corps aircraft group based at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California, operating under the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3rd MAW) and I Marine Expeditionary Force. MAG-39 is the West Coast home of the Marine H-1 family — the AH-1Z "Viper" attack helicopter and UH-1Y "Venom" utility helicopter — and consists of four Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons (HMLA-169, HMLA-267, HMLA-369, and HMLA-367 "Scarface"), HMLAT-303 (the H-1 Fleet Replacement Squadron), two MV-22B Osprey squadrons, an aviation logistics squadron (MALS-39), a Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS), and a Headquarters Squadron. MAG-39 was originally activated on April 16, 1968 at Quang Tri Combat Base in Vietnam under the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, was deactivated in October 1969, temporarily reactivated for Operation Frequent Wind (the 1975 Saigon evacuation), and permanently reactivated in September 1976 at Camp Pendleton under 3rd MAW command. The group has supported Operation Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope (Somalia), Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
