USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42) was a Midway-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1945 and named after the 32nd President of the United States. Originally named USS Coral Sea, she was renamed before commissioning. CV-42 served through the Cold War, deploying to the Mediterranean with the Sixth Fleet and participating in operations that demonstrated American resolve during the most tense periods of the superpower standoff. Known affectionately as "Teddy" or "Rosie," FDR served until 1977, covering the transition from straight-deck carrier operations to the angled-deck jet age.
