USS Independence (CV-62) was a Forrestal-class supercarrier that served from 1959 to 1998, compiling one of the most extensive deployment records in carrier history. This embroidered patch captures CV-62's identity in full detail. Independence saw combat in Vietnam, responded to the Lebanon crisis in 1983, and deployed for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. She served as America's only forward-deployed carrier in Yokosuka, Japan, during the 1990s, providing the most visible American military presence in the Pacific. Her nearly four decades of service spanned the entire Cold War and the beginning of the post-Cold War era.
