VMGR-252 90th Anniversary Squadron Patch

Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 (VMGR-252) — "Otis" — 90th Anniversary Squadron Patch

This squadron patch marks the 90th anniversary of VMGR-252, celebrating the remarkable service record of the Marine Corps' oldest continuously active squadron from 1928 to 2018. Originally commissioned as Headquarters Detachment 7M on 1 June 1928 in San Diego, California, the squadron underwent several redesignations before receiving its permanent VMGR-252 designation on 1 February 1962, when the KC-130 Hercules transformed its mission to aerial refueling.

VMGR-252's nine decades of operations encompass an extraordinary range of missions and achievements. In October 1962, the squadron flew critical resupply missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis, transporting troops to Cuba and evacuating American citizens. On 6 June 1964, a squadron aircraft set a turboprop transport altitude record above 44,000 feet, while volunteer parachutists aboard set a world record for night group freefall, reclaiming the title from the Soviet Union. In July 1981, 471 Marines from the squadron received the Humanitarian Service Medal for assisting Cuban refugees during the Mariel boatlift.

From delivering over 10 million pounds of fuel during 937 combat sorties in Operation Desert Storm to forming the backbone of air logistics during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, VMGR-252 has remained at the forefront of every major Marine Corps operation. The squadron transitioned to the KC-130J Super Hercules beginning in December 2002 and continues to serve under MAG-14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Perfect For: VMGR-252 Marines past and present, 90th anniversary commemorative collectors, MAG-14 and 2nd MAW personnel, KC-130 aircrew members, Cherry Point station personnel, and Marine Corps aviation historians.

Ninety years of Marine Corps aerial excellence — from San Diego in 1928 to global expeditionary operations, VMGR-252 defines the standard for refueler transport aviation.
