Marine Fighter Squadron 214 (VMF-214), the Blacksheep, earned immortal fame under the command of Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington during World War II. Flying the F4U Corsair in the Solomon Islands campaign, the Blacksheep compiled one of the most impressive combat records in Marine aviation history. The squadron was composed of replacement pilots and misfits that Boyington welded into a lethal fighting unit. Their exploits became the basis for the television series "Baa Baa Black Sheep," and Boyington received the Medal of Honor for his aerial combat achievements. VMF-214's legacy defines Marine fighter aviation.
