This embroidered patch represents Marine Attack Training Squadron 102 (VMAT-102), the Skyhawks. VMAT-102 was the fleet replacement squadron for the A-4 Skyhawk, training new Marine attack pilots on the lightweight attack jet before they headed to operational squadrons. Every Marine who flew the A-4 passed through VMAT-102's training program, learning weapons delivery, close air support procedures, and the unique handling characteristics of Ed Heinemann's legendary light attack jet. VMAT-102's legacy is the foundation of an entire generation of Marine attack aviation.
