Marine Attack Squadron 142 (VMA-142), the "Flying Gators," was a Marine Corps Reserve attack squadron that flew the A-4 Skyhawk in the close air support and light attack mission. Based in Florida, the Flying Gators maintained combat readiness alongside their civilian careers, training to the same standards as active-duty Marine attack squadrons and standing ready to augment the fleet Marine Force whenever the nation called. The "Gator" identity reflected the squadron's Florida roots and the aggressive, territorial nature of both the reptile and the Marines who wore its patch.
