USMC Mountain Warfare Training Center Patch

Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC), Bridgeport, California

The Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC) stands as one of the most demanding and isolated installations in the entire United States military, situated at 6,800 feet above sea level in Pickel Meadows within the Toiyabe National Forest, 21 miles northwest of Bridgeport, California. Established on 31 August 1951 as the Cold Weather Battalion, Staging Regiment, Training and Replacement Command, the facility was created in direct response to the brutal mountain and cold weather combat Marines experienced during the Korean War's Chosin Reservoir campaign in the winter of 1950-1951.

Original construction at Pickel Meadows began in August 1951 and consisted of temporary buildings and 50 tents for billeting. In its first winter season alone, an extraordinary 23,213 Marines passed through the facility's courses. The Cold Weather Battalion was redesignated in May 1952 and underwent several name changes before being officially renamed the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in 1963 to reflect its expanded year-round mountain warfare mission. MWTC operated continuously until 1967, when it was placed in caretaker status due to the demands of the Vietnam War, before being formally reactivated as a full-time command on 19 May 1976.

Spanning 46,000 acres of Sierra Nevada terrain with elevations ranging from 6,700 to nearly 12,000 feet, MWTC conducts unit and individual training courses that prepare USMC, Joint, and Allied Forces for operations in mountainous, high-altitude, and cold weather environments. During the 1980s, training focused on preparing Marines for NATO's Northern Flank operations in Norway. Following the September 11 attacks, MWTC provided critical pre-deployment training for battalions headed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, with training tempo increasing significantly after 2008 when the USMC took on expanded operations in Afghanistan's rugged mountain terrain. Today, MWTC remains a vital component of Marine Corps readiness as a subordinate element of the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command.

Perfect For: MWTC staff and graduates, Mountain Leader Course alumni, Marine Corps cold weather warfare specialists, Bridgeport training veterans, combat instructors, and Marines who completed mountain warfare training.

A tribute to the Corps' premier mountain and cold weather warfare institution, forging combat-ready Marines in some of America's most unforgiving terrain since 1951.
