AH-1W Super Cobra Light/Attack Patch — Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra Attack Helicopter Embroidered Patch
The Whiskey Cobra—the twin-engine attack helicopter that carried Marine close air support from the deserts of Kuwait to the mountains of Afghanistan for three decades of relentless combat.
The Bell AH-1W Super Cobra was the United States Marine Corps' primary attack helicopter from the late 1980s through the 2010s, serving as the backbone of the Marine light attack helicopter community during some of the most intense combat operations in modern military history. Designated the "Whiskey" model by its crews, the AH-1W was the first twin-engine variant of the Cobra family, powered by two General Electric T700-GE-401 turboshaft engines that provided the power, reliability, and survivability needed for operations in the demanding environments where Marines fight.
The Super Cobra entered Marine Corps service in 1986 and quickly proved itself in combat during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, where AH-1W crews destroyed scores of Iraqi armored vehicles, bunkers, and defensive positions during the ground offensive to liberate Kuwait. The aircraft carried the M197 20mm three-barrel Gatling cannon, TOW and Hellfire anti-tank missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, and 2.75-inch rocket pods—a devastating weapons suite that made the Super Cobra the most heavily armed helicopter in the Marine Corps inventory. During Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, AH-1W crews flew deep attack missions ahead of advancing Marine ground forces, engaging Iraqi armor and infantry from the Kuwaiti border to Baghdad.
The "Light/Attack" concept paired the AH-1W Super Cobra with the UH-1N Twin Huey (and later the UH-1Y Venom) in composite HMLA squadrons, creating an integrated team that combined attack helicopter firepower with utility helicopter versatility. The AH-1W has been replaced in active service by the AH-1Z Viper, but the Super Cobra's legacy as the workhorse of Marine close air support during the Gulf Wars and the Global War on Terror remains an indelible chapter in Marine Corps aviation history.
Perfect For: AH-1W Super Cobra pilots and crew members, HMLA squadron veterans, Marine Corps Skid Kid community members, Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom helicopter crews, attack helicopter aviation enthusiasts, and military patch collectors.
The Whiskey Cobra—thirty years of delivering fire and steel in defense of Marines on the ground, from the deserts of Southwest Asia to the mountains of the Hindu Kush.
