This throwback patch honors the earliest and most storied chapter of the Hawks' lineage — the era of VMF(N)-533 under Lieutenant Colonel Marion M. 'Black Mac' Magruder during World War II. Magruder was a pioneering Marine aviator who understood that the future of air combat would include the night, and he transformed VMF(N)-533 into one of the most effective night fighter units in the Pacific Theater. His pilots flew radar-equipped fighters into the darkness to intercept Japanese bombers and kamikaze aircraft that targeted the fleet under cover of night — a mission that required extraordinary skill, courage, and trust in primitive airborne radar technology. 'Black Mac's Killers' became the unofficial name for the squadron, and the aggressive spirit Magruder instilled has carried through every generation of Hawks since. This throwback design connects today's VMFA(AW)-533 Marines to the founding ethos of the squadron — fly at night, find the enemy, and kill him before he knows you're there.
