Officially Licensed USMC VMFA-531 Grey Ghosts Leather Patches — Ghosts in Leather
Because even decommissioned squadrons can still haunt the flightline.
VMFA-531, the Grey Ghosts, earned one of the most distinguished records in Marine Corps aviation history before their decommissioning in 1992. Commissioned in November 1942 as the Marine Corps' first night fighter squadron, VMF(N)-531 deployed to the South Pacific and became the first naval aviation night-fighter unit to operate in the theater — hunting Japanese bombers in the dark over the Russell Islands, Vella Lavella, and Bougainville. They were the first Marine fighter squadron to join NORAD, stood ready during the Cuban Missile Crisis at NAS Key West, and in April 1965 became the first Marine jet squadron to see combat since Korea when they flew F-4 Phantoms into Da Nang. They later participated in Operation Eagle Claw, the attempted Iranian hostage rescue, aboard USS Coral Sea. These leather patches honor half a century of Grey Ghost heritage — the kind of legacy that doesn't fade just because the squadron stood down.
Perfect For: VMFA-531 Grey Ghosts veterans and families, Marine Corps aviation historians, Phantom and Hornet community members, leather patch collectors, and anyone who knows that ghosts never really leave.
