Officially Licensed USMC VMA-217 Squadron Patches — Max's Wild Hares
A WWII combat squadron that fought from Bougainville to Tokyo — and earned every thread on this patch.
Marine Attack Squadron 217 (VMA-217), originally commissioned as VMF-217 in September 1942 at MCAS El Centro, California, was a fighter squadron that saw intense combat across the Pacific Theater during World War II. Known as "Max's Wild Hares," the squadron trained on F4F Wildcats before shipping out to the Pacific, where they struck the Japanese garrison at Rabaul from Bougainville, conducted raids on Rota from Guam, and on 16 February 1945 participated in a daring raid on Tokyo as part of Task Force 58 — launching from USS Wasp alongside sister squadron VMF-216 to attack airfields at Yokosuka and Tateyama. After the war, VMF-217 was deactivated, then briefly reactivated in the Marine Reserves from 1953 to 1964 at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts, flying the A-4 Skyhawk before being redesignated VMA-217. This 4.5" patch is a faithful remake of the original — a piece of Marine Corps aviation history.
Perfect For: VMA-217 / VMF-217 veterans and descendants, WWII Marine aviation historians, A-4 Skyhawk enthusiasts, Marine Corps Reserve aviation community, military patch collectors, and anyone who respects the squadrons that fought across the Pacific.
