VMA-231 "Ace of Spades" was a Marine Attack Squadron that flew the AV-8B Harrier II — the iconic jump jet capable of vertical and short takeoff and landing operations from austere forward bases and amphibious assault ships. Based out of MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, VMA-231 was part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and provided close air support, deep air support, and armed reconnaissance to Marine ground forces. The Harrier community was one of the most demanding in Marine aviation — flying a single-engine, single-seat jet that could hover, transition to forward flight, and deliver ordnance with devastating precision required a unique breed of pilot. VMA-231's "Ace of Spades" insignia became one of the most recognized squadron patches in the Corps, symbolizing the deadly hand they dealt to any adversary.
