Officially Licensed USMC The Basic School Patch — Where Every Marine Officer Begins
Every Marine officer starts here — six months at Quantico that define a career.
The Basic School (TBS) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, is the Marine Corps' foundational officer training course, required for every newly commissioned officer regardless of commissioning source — whether OCS, the Naval Academy, NROTC, or the Enlisted Commissioning Program. Over approximately six months at Camp Barrett, lieutenants are immersed in infantry tactics, weapons employment, land navigation, patrolling, military planning, and leadership under pressure. TBS ensures that every Marine officer, no matter their eventual Military Occupational Specialty, is first and foremost a basic infantry officer capable of leading Marines in combat. The course has been shaping Marine officers since 1968, carrying forward a training tradition rooted in the earliest days of formalized officer education in the Corps. This officially licensed patch represents the shared rite of passage that bonds every Marine officer — the one experience they all have in common, from infantry platoon commanders to aviators to logisticians.
Perfect For: TBS graduates, Marine Corps officers of all ranks and MOS, Quantico alumni, OCS and commissioning program graduates, Marine officer heritage collectors, and anyone who respects the foundation of Marine Corps leadership.
