Officially Licensed USMC MALS-42 Warhammers Sticker — The Reserve Maintainers Who Answered the Call

When the active component needed reinforcements on the flight line, the Warhammers didn't hesitate.

Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 42 (MALS-42) was the reserve MALS that proved reserve Marines are anything but part-time. Originally redesignated from a detachment of MALS-49 on June 18, 1992, MALS-42 fell under Marine Aircraft Group 42 and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, headquartered at NAS Atlanta with detachments spread across MCAS Miramar, NAS Norfolk, and NAS JRB New Orleans. The squadron provided direct aviation logistics support — intermediate-level maintenance, aviation ordnance, supply, and information systems — to a diverse mix of flying units including VMFA-142, HMLA-773, and Navy squadrons VAW-77 and VR-46. But the Warhammers' defining moment came when the nation went to war. On February 13, 2003, MALS-42 was activated and assigned to 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing to execute the Fleet Replacement Squadron mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom — the first time a reserve MALS had been called up to backfill an active-duty maintenance squadron during a major regional conflict. In 2004, the squadron deployed a detachment to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan in support of HMLA-773's combat operations during Operation Enduring Freedom, with three successive detachments supporting the fight through September 2005. When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in August 2005, the Warhammers pivoted to humanitarian relief, forward-deploying personnel for 30 days of sustained support operations. MALS-42 was deactivated in 2008 during a reorganization of Marine aviation, but its legacy as the reserve squadron that proved the FRS concept in combat endures. This sticker is for every reservist who proved that when the call comes, the Warhammers swing just as hard as the active side.
