MWCS-28 Spartans Patch
Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 (MWCS-28) — "Spartans"
The Spartans of MWCS-28 were originally activated on 1 September 1967 as Marine Wing Communications Squadron 2 (MWCS-2), formed by consolidating the organic communications sections from Marine Air Control Group 2's subordinate squadrons into a single, centralized communications element at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. Under the command of Major Madigan with just 5 officers and 55 enlisted Marines, the squadron was established during the height of the Vietnam War to ensure the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing's ability to provide combat-ready communications for major operations. On 1 July 1972, the squadron was redesignated Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 and assigned to Marine Air Control Group 28.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, MWCS-28 developed critical capabilities in supporting Joint, Coalition, Wing, and Group-level communications, participating in exercises across NATO allied nations including Turkey during "Display Determination 79" — just seven days after a massive fire destroyed the squadron's headquarters buildings on 6 September 1979. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, MWCS-28 Detachment A immediately deployed with MAG-40, and Detachment B followed in December to Saudi Arabia for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In February 2003, the Spartans deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, establishing three crucial communication nodes in Iraq supporting 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing command and control. MWCS-28 deployed again to Iraq in 2004 and 2005, and to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan in February 2011, providing communications for all 2nd MAW aviation command and control squadrons.
Perfect For: MWCS-28 Spartans veterans and active duty members, Marine communications and data systems personnel, MACG-28 and 2nd MAW alumni, Cherry Point community members, and Marine aviation command and control professionals.
This patch represents the Spartans who ensure that every Marine aircraft, every command center, and every air control agency stays connected — the invisible backbone of Marine aviation combat power.
