In World War II, the 20th Air Force commanded the B-29 Superfortress strategic bombing campaign against Japan, including the incendiary raids and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the Cold War, the 20th Air Force transitioned to managing the Air Force's intercontinental ballistic missile force, overseeing the Minuteman and Peacekeeper ICBM wings that formed the land-based leg of the nuclear triad.
