The Danab ("Lightning") Advanced Infantry Battalion is an elite Somali commando force that represents one of the most significant security force assistance success stories in the Horn of Africa. Established as part of the U.S.-supported effort to build capable Somali National Army units, the Danab Commandos are trained to conduct advanced infantry operations including direct action raids, counterterrorism missions, and offensive operations against al-Shabaab and other extremist organizations threatening stability in the region.
The Danab force was developed through a partnership between the Somali Federal Government, the United States, and the Turkish military, with U.S. Special Operations forces providing advisory support and tactical training. Danab operators undergo a rigorous selection and training process that emphasizes small-unit tactics, marksmanship, combat medicine, and leadership — producing soldiers who are among the most capable in the Somali National Army. The Danab Commandos have conducted hundreds of operations across southern and central Somalia, clearing al-Shabaab strongholds, liberating towns, and establishing security in areas that had been under extremist control for years. Their reputation for professionalism and effectiveness has made them a cornerstone of Somalia's counterterrorism strategy and a model for security force assistance programs across East Africa.
