US CBP Drone Pilot Patch

U.S. Customs and Border Protection — Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Drone Pilot

This patch represents the elite cadre of drone pilots serving within U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the world's largest aviation law enforcement organization. CBP's Unmanned Aircraft Systems program began in 2005 when the agency deployed its first MQ-9 Predator B (Guardian) drone along the U.S.-Mexico border, marking the first sustained use of military-grade unmanned aircraft for domestic law enforcement purposes in the United States.

CBP's UAS program operates from multiple National Air Security Operations Centers (NASOC), including facilities in Corpus Christi, Texas; Sierra Vista, Arizona; and San Angelo, Texas, among others. The MQ-9 Guardian fleet provides persistent surveillance, reconnaissance, and detection capabilities across more than 6,000 miles of international border and vast maritime approaches. CBP drone pilots, many of whom are former military aviators, operate these sophisticated platforms to detect illegal crossings, drug smuggling operations, and threats to national security — often in coordination with ground-based Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and partner law enforcement agencies.

The UAS program has expanded from border surveillance to include disaster response, search and rescue support, and critical infrastructure monitoring, demonstrating the versatility of unmanned aviation in federal law enforcement. CBP drone pilots undergo extensive training in remote piloting, sensor operation, and airspace integration to maintain the highest standards of operational safety and mission effectiveness.

Perfect For: CBP drone pilots, Air and Marine Operations personnel, NASOC staff, UAS operators and sensor specialists, Border Patrol agents, and federal law enforcement aviation professionals.

A tribute to the CBP drone pilots who provide the eyes above the border — persistent surveillance and aerial intelligence protecting America's frontiers.
