Official VP-9 Golden Eagles 4th of July Patch — Patrol Squadron 9 Embroidered Patch
The Golden Eagles celebrate Independence Day—VP-9, one of the Navy's premier maritime patrol squadrons, flying the P-8A Poseidon from NAS Whidbey Island in defense of American freedom.
Patrol Squadron 9 (VP-9), the "Golden Eagles," is one of the United States Navy's most distinguished maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadrons. Originally established as Patrol Squadron 9 on 15 March 1951 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, the squadron has a proud lineage that traces back through multiple redesignations and forward deployments spanning the Cold War, the Global War on Terror, and the modern era of great power competition. VP-9 currently operates the Boeing P-8A Poseidon—the Navy's state-of-the-art maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft that replaced the venerable P-3C Orion.
The P-8A Poseidon is a military derivative of the Boeing 737-800ERX commercial airliner, modified with advanced mission systems including the AN/APY-10 multi-mission surface search radar, a Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) boom, an advanced electro-optical/infrared sensor suite, and the ability to deploy sonobuoys, torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and other weapons. The Poseidon conducts anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence collection, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions across vast oceanic areas, providing fleet commanders with the maritime domain awareness critical to controlling the seas.
This 4th of July commemorative patch celebrates VP-9's patriotic spirit and the Golden Eagles' commitment to the defense of American sovereignty and freedom of navigation on the world's oceans. Assigned to Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10 at NAS Whidbey Island, VP-9 deploys regularly to the Western Pacific, the Middle East, and other theaters of operation, conducting the long-range maritime patrol missions that have been the backbone of naval aviation's contribution to sea control since World War II.
Perfect For: VP-9 Golden Eagles members and veterans, P-8A Poseidon community members, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10 personnel, NAS Whidbey Island aviators, maritime patrol aviation enthusiasts, and patriotic military patch collectors.
The Golden Eagles of VP-9—defending American freedom from above the waves, watching over the world's oceans aboard the mighty Poseidon.
