The 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (3rd LAR) "Wolfpack" is a United States Marine Corps armored reconnaissance unit that operates the LAV-25 Light Armored Vehicle. As a reconnaissance and screening force, the Wolfpack operates ahead of the main body of Marine forces, finding the enemy, developing the situation, and providing early warning of threats to the advancing Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
The 3rd LAR Wolfpack's LAV-25 is an eight-wheeled armored vehicle armed with a 25mm chain gun and capable of speeds over 60 mph on roads, giving the battalion exceptional mobility and firepower. The Wolfpack conducts reconnaissance, security, and economy of force operations, covering vast frontages and gaps between larger units to prevent the enemy from achieving surprise. LAR Marines are trained to fight mounted and dismounted, combining the firepower of their vehicles with aggressive infantry tactics. The Wolfpack has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, where their speed and lethality proved invaluable in the fast-moving operations that characterized those conflicts.
