The 6th Machine Gun Battalion was a United States Marine Corps combat unit that served with distinction during World War I, providing devastating machine gun fire support to Marine infantry in some of the Great War's most brutal battles on the Western Front. This patch is a historical reproduction honoring the Marines who manned the heavy machine guns that helped turn the tide of battle against the German Imperial Army in 1918.
The 6th Machine Gun Battalion fought alongside the legendary 4th Marine Brigade in the American Expeditionary Forces, participating in the battles that earned Marines the famous "Devil Dog" nickname from their German adversaries. At Belleau Wood, Soissons, Blanc Mont, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the battalion's machine gunners laid down withering fields of fire that stopped German advances and supported Marine infantry assaults across no-man's land. The heavy Browning and Hotchkiss machine guns required disciplined crews who could maintain sustained fire under artillery bombardment and gas attacks, making machine gunners among the most critical and targeted troops on the battlefield.
