Every Marine is a rifleman. Every Marine is also a fighter. MCMAP — the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program — ensures that every Marine is armed even without a weapon, carrying a combat mindset forged through the fusion of 17 different martial arts disciplines with Marine Corps core values. This patch represents the warrior spirit that MCMAP builds in every Marine.
Officially established by Marine Corps Order 1500.54 in 2002, MCMAP replaced all previous close-combat systems with a revolutionary program that combines mental, character, and physical disciplines. Drawing from boxing, jiu-jitsu, judo, krav maga, Muay Thai, karate, taekwondo, and more, MCMAP traces its martial heritage back to the bayonet and cutlass techniques of Marine boarding parties. The belt progression system — tan, gray, green, brown, and six degrees of black — develops Marines from basic combatives through advanced instructor-level expertise. The program's motto, "One Mind, Any Weapon," captures its essence: a Marine's most dangerous weapon is the warrior mindset itself.
