The 3rd Marine Raider Battalion is one of three operational battalions within the Marine Raider Regiment, the combat element of Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Today's Raiders trace their lineage directly to the WWII Marine Raiders — "Edson's" 1st Battalion and "Carlson's" 2nd Battalion, formed in 1942 as America's first special operations forces. The modern 3rd Raider Battalion was formed from the Marine Special Operations Advisor Group in 2009 and has since deployed across AFRICOM, CENTCOM, and INDOPACOM conducting direct action, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, and counterterrorism operations. From rescuing 170+ hostages in Mali to combat operations against ISIS in Iraq, the Raiders have earned over 300 valor awards across MARSOC since 2006.
