The 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment — known as the "Thundering Third" — is one of the most combat-tested infantry battalions in the Marine Corps. Based at Camp Pendleton, California, under the 1st Marine Division, 3/1 has a storied history of close combat from the frozen Chosin Reservoir in Korea to the brutal urban fighting in Fallujah, Iraq, during Operation Phantom Fury in 2004. The battalion's "Make Them Count" motto embodies the infantryman's ethos: ammunition is finite, targets are real, and every shot matters. This patch represents the grunts of 3/1 who have made every engagement count — from house-to-house clearing in Anbar Province to training on the ranges of Southern California.
