The Basic School (TBS) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, is where every newly commissioned Marine officer — regardless of Military Occupational Specialty — learns to be a Marine rifle platoon leader. It is the only branch of service that sends every officer through the same combat-focused ground training, and TBS is where that tradition lives. Established in its current form in 1968 at Camp Barrett on the Quantico reservation, TBS runs the Basic Officer Course — a grueling six-month program that turns second lieutenants into Marine officers capable of leading Marines in ground combat. The curriculum covers small unit tactics, weapons employment, land navigation, patrolling, fire support coordination, military operations on urbanized terrain, and the planning and execution of offensive and defensive operations. Every class begins with approximately 250 lieutenants and puts them through thousands of hours of classroom instruction, field exercises, live-fire ranges, and evaluated operations in the hills and forests surrounding Quantico. The Warfighter Instructors are the backbone of TBS — the captains and majors who design, execute, and evaluate every tactical exercise, every night patrol, every ambush lane, and every fire-and-maneuver problem that shapes a new generation of Marine leaders. They are handpicked from the operating forces for their tactical expertise and leadership, and they return to the fleet having left their mark on every lieutenant who passes through Quantico.
