3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment — the 'Thundering Third' — is an infantry battalion of the 4th Marine Regiment, based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. The 4th Marines have one of the most storied lineages in the Marine Corps — the regiment that served as the 'China Marines' in Shanghai during the 1930s, defended Corregidor and Bataan in the Philippines during World War II, and was reconstituted to fight at Guam, Okinawa, and across the Pacific. The 4th Marines fought in Vietnam, in Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, and have deployed throughout the Indo-Pacific as part of the Marine Corps' forward-deployed forces. 3rd Battalion carries this legacy forward as a rifle battalion trained and ready for the full spectrum of infantry operations — from large-scale amphibious assault to counterinsurgency, from urban combat to jungle warfare. The battalion has deployed repeatedly to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Western Pacific, and its Marines have earned a reputation for aggressive, disciplined infantry operations in the most demanding environments.
