The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) is the only permanently forward-deployed MEU in the Marine Corps, based at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, as part of III Marine Expeditionary Force. The "Ready-Partnered-Lethal" motto captures the three pillars of the 31st MEU's identity: always ready to respond to any crisis, partnered with allied and partner nations throughout the Indo-Pacific, and lethal enough to fight and win in any scenario.
The 31st MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) consisting of a command element, ground combat element (typically a reinforced infantry battalion like CLB-31), aviation combat element (VMM-262 REIN or VMM-265 REIN), and logistics combat element. Embarked aboard Navy amphibious ships, the 31st MEU patrols the Western Pacific, conducting theater security cooperation, bilateral exercises, humanitarian assistance, and maintaining the forward presence that deters aggression and reassures allies.
As the nation's 911 force in the Pacific, the 31st MEU can respond to crises within hours, conducting missions ranging from embassy reinforcement and noncombatant evacuation to amphibious assault and humanitarian disaster relief.
