1st Marine Regiment is one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 1st Marine Division at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. The regiment was activated on November 27, 1913, and has fought in virtually every major American conflict since World War I. The 1st Marines fought at Belleau Wood and Soissons in World War I, at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa in World War II, at the Chosin Reservoir and throughout the Korean War, in Vietnam, in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom — including the Battle of Fallujah, one of the most intense urban combat operations in Marine Corps history. The regiment has earned the Presidential Unit Citation multiple times and its Marines have earned numerous Medals of Honor. 1st Marine Regiment represents the very best of Marine Corps infantry — the riflemen, squad leaders, platoon commanders, and company commanders who close with and destroy the enemy in every clime and place.
