Officially Licensed 15th MEU Service Support Group SSG Patch — USMC Marine Expeditionary Unit Combat Logistics Embroidered Patch
From the earthquake rubble of San Francisco to the streets of Mogadishu and the desert of Kandahar, MSSG-15 kept the 15th MEU in the fight. If you were part of it, this patch is yours.
MEU Service Support Group 15 (MSSG-15) was activated on October 15, 1987, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, and assigned to the 1st Force Service Support Group. Stood up as the combat service support element of the newly formed 15th Marine Amphibious Unit, the group was redesignated MSSG-15 in February 1988 when the MAU became the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. With roughly 300 Marines and Sailors, MSSG-15 provided the full spectrum of expeditionary logistics — supply, maintenance, transportation, engineering, explosive ordnance disposal, military police, medical, dental, water production, fuel distribution, and landing support — giving the 15th MEU the ability to sustain itself for 15 days in austere environments anywhere in the world. The group saw action almost immediately. In October 1989, MSSG-15 deployed for earthquake relief after the Loma Prieta disaster struck the San Francisco Bay Area. In June 1991, the group supported Operation Fiery Vigil, assisting in the evacuation of personnel from the Philippines following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. On December 9, 1992, MSSG-15 went ashore with the 15th MEU to spearhead Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, supporting the securing of Mogadishu and the American Embassy before pushing out to Berbera, Baido, and Kismayo to protect food distribution convoys and restore order. In 1994, MSSG-15 supported Operation Support Hope in Rwanda and then helped relocate the U.S. Liaison Office from Mogadishu to Nairobi, Kenya. The group participated in Operation Southern Watch in Southwest Asia in 1996 and 1997, supported operations in East Timor in 2000 and 2001, and then deployed with the 15th MEU for Operation Enduring Freedom — supporting an amphibious assault over 400 miles into landlocked Afghanistan and helping establish Camp Rhino, America’s first forward operating base in country. Redesignated as Combat Logistics Battalion 15 (CLB-15) in 2006, the unit continues to serve as the logistics combat element of the 15th MEU to this day.
