Officially Licensed USMC WWI Historic Bulldog Patch — Embroidered Patch

The Original Devil Dogs

Before there was a modern Marine Corps, there was Belleau Wood — and the German soldiers who gave the Marines their most enduring nickname. This WWI Historic Bulldog patch pays tribute to the Teufel Hunden, the "Devil Dogs" of World War I whose ferocity in battle earned a title that has defined the Corps for over a century.

In June 1918, Marines of the 5th and 6th Regiments attacked German positions in Belleau Wood, a dense hunting preserve in northern France that had been fortified into a deathtrap of machine guns and artillery. For nearly three weeks, Marines fought through the wood in some of the bloodiest combat Americans had experienced since the Civil War. German intelligence reports from the battle reportedly referred to the Marines as "Teufel Hunden" — Devil Dogs — a testament to the ferocity and tenacity they displayed. The bulldog became forever associated with the Marine Corps, and the 5th and 6th Marines still wear the French Fourragère, a decoration awarded by the French government for their extraordinary valor at Belleau Wood.

Perfect For:
Marine Corps history enthusiasts, WWI historians, Devil Dog tradition supporters, USMC heritage collectors, Belleau Wood commemoration participants, and Marine Corps birthday celebration attendees

Teufel Hunden. The name the enemy gave us. The name we kept.

Size is shown on the product page and updates with the variant you select (example: 3"). If you’re mounting on a hat or small panel, choose smaller sizes; for plate carriers and display boards, larger sizes fit better.
