USMC 4th Marines Patch — Embroidered Patch
The China Marines — From Shanghai to Okinawa
The 4th Marine Regiment carries one of the most unique and storied lineages in the Corps. Known as the "China Marines" for their legendary service in Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s, the regiment endured the fall of Corregidor, was reborn from Raider battalions, and fought with distinction at Guam and Okinawa. This patch represents a regiment whose history reads like a novel of courage, loss, and resurrection.
The 4th Marines served in Shanghai from 1927 to 1941, earning the "China Marines" moniker that became synonymous with tough, experienced Leathernecks. When war came, the regiment was transferred to the Philippines and fought at Corregidor until its surrender in May 1942. To prevent the enemy from capturing the colors, the regiment's commanding officer ordered them burned. The 4th Marines were reconstituted in February 1944 from the 1st and 2nd Raider Battalions and immediately went into action, fighting at Guam as part of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade and at Okinawa with the 6th Marine Division, where they helped capture the capital city of Naha.
