Born from the necessities of defending one of Europe's longest coastlines and most complex archipelagos, Finland's Coastal Jaegers represent a unique naval infantry tradition shaped by the harsh realities of Baltic defense. This patch carries the identity of a force trained to fight in some of the most extreme conditions on earth — from frozen archipelago islands to dense boreal forests along the Finnish coast.
Finland's coastal defense tradition developed during the Cold War as part of the nation's total defense strategy against potential Soviet amphibious invasion across the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic. The Rannikkojääkärit (Coastal Jaegers) are specialized light infantry units trained for operations in Finland's vast archipelago — over 40,000 islands and islets along the coast. Finnish coastal defense forces specialize in anti-ship warfare, mine warfare, and guerrilla-style operations among the islands, using the complex terrain to deny access to superior naval forces. As a new NATO member since 2023, Finnish coastal defense capabilities have become an increasingly important component of the alliance's Baltic defense posture.
