USMC 6th Marines 3rd Battalion WWI Patch — USMC Embroidered Patch
3rd Battalion, 6th Marines — The Indianhead Division
On the evening of June 6, 1918, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines swept into the southern end of Belleau Wood and into the village of Bouresches, encountering a storm of machine gun fire, sharpshooters, and barbed wire. This patch carries the Indianhead insignia as worn by one of the hardest-hit battalions at Belleau Wood.
Major Berton Sibley's 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines launched its attack on June 6, 1918, advancing through open wheat fields into the teeth of German defenses in Belleau Wood. Marines and German infantry fought hand-to-hand in the dense undergrowth, with casualties mounting on both sides. By the end of the day, the battalion had suffered nearly 400 casualties — among the highest of any battalion in the brigade. Elements of 3/6 also captured and held the village of Bouresches under intense counterattack. Despite the devastating losses, the battalion maintained its foothold in the wood, setting the stage for the three-week battle that followed.
Perfect For: 3/6 Marines veterans across all eras, Belleau Wood and Bouresches history enthusiasts, 6th Marines heritage collectors, and descendants of the Marines who attacked on June 6, 1918.
Into the wood and into history — 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines.
